| The Okefenokee Area Council is hosting
a "Weekend Wood
Badge" course that will include staff and participants from different area
councils. Wood Badge
participants from other Councils
can carpool together and will be placed in the
same patrol in order to work together. |
|
Purpose of Wood Badge
The purpose of Wood Badge is simple. It gives men and women the
knowledge and skills necessary to strengthen the entire Scouting program
from Cub Scouts to Venturing. It provides dedicated Scouters with the concepts, tools and methods needed to be effective leaders.
Wood Badge creates a structured opportunity to develop and apply these leadership skills.
Wood Badge is not an award. It confers no special status or membership.
Wearing the beads simply means that you understand the value of
training, you’ve tried your best to become an outstanding leader,
and you have implemented your new ideals of Scouting.
|
|
The Rewards of Wood Badge
The benefits of
Wood Badge are both tangible and intangible:
...It will help make your job easier. By
your leadership and example, others will share more of the load.
...Form new and lasting friendships. Join with other Scouters to share ideas, discuss challenges and locate
resources.
...Better understand the skill of leadership.
Apply these skills to scouting, to your career, to your family and
to
community life.
…Realize
great personal satisfaction. See your skills improve. Inspire confidence and respect in both youth
and
adults.

Is Wood Badge for you?
Wood Badge is
designed to meet the advanced training needs of all Scouting Leaders regardless of their position in
Scouting. It is open to all Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Venture, District and
Council Volunteers and Professionals. Scouting needs skilled leaders in
every aspect of the program.
|
|
Am I qualified to attend?
Scouters attend Wood Badge by invitation from the council upon
recommendation of the district. Each Scouter must complete Basic Leader
Training in one of the programs: Cub Scout, Boy Scout or Venturing prior
to the start of Wood Badge.
Proficiency in outdoor skills is not required. There is no tenure
requirement. The course is open to all qualified men and women
including those with
special needs. The number of participants is limited and will represent
a cross section from all the programs. After receiving an invitation,
return the application form (will be available soon)
quickly with your deposit to reserve a space.

What to Expect?
A
Wood badge course consists of two parts; the practical phase and the
application phase.
>>
Practical-
For six days you will learn and apply the principles of leadership using
the skills and methods
of Scouting. You will be living and working in the outdoors with fellow
Scouters under the guidance of
the
Wood Badge staff. Lasting friendships are formed, as the spirit of
Scouting spreads. Wood Badge is
FUN!
"A
Game with a Purpose."
>>
Application-
By the time
the practical phase is over you will have set some personal goals that
will
strengthen
both you and Scouting. You have up to 18 months to complete those
goals. By practicing
your new
knowledge and skills, you will become a more effective leader.
Others will follow your
example.
When your goals are met, you will be presented with the symbols of Wood
Badge (Beads, Neckerchief and Woggle) in a ceremony at your Council’s
chosen time and place.
